Session 1
April 17th and 18th
For this session, participants read through Huber and Hutchings’ Integrative Learning: Mapping the Terrain and we discussed most of the following questions:
- How have you conceived of integrative learning? The authors cite Boyer (1990) in stating that, “The capacity to connect is central to scholarship broadly conceived—whether focused on discovery and creativity, integrating and interpreting knowledge from different disciplines, applying knowledge through real-world engagements, or teaching students and communicating with the public.” (p.1-2) How does this definition compare to yours
- Integrative learning vs. integrative thinking
- To what degree do you agree with the authors’ claim regarding the need for integrative learning/thinking
- How can we leverage students’ passions and career aspirations to drive integrative learning/thinking?
- Where do you see integrative learning/thinking supported at KCC? How successful do you think we are? What other opportunities do you see for KCC, programs, instructors to focus more on integrative learning/thinking?
- How can we help students become intentional/self-directed/strategic integrative learners/thinkers?
- How can we assess integrative learning/thinking?
We decided that our best use of time for this FIG would be to bring in assignments or lessons we use with our classes and brainstorm ways to make them more integrative.
